Why you will love brewing this tea
- So fun: Halloween mocktails are perfect for Halloween parties—spooky, fun, and colorful!
- Non-alcoholic drink option: It’s a family-friendly Halloween mocktail, and great for everyone.
- Magic color change! The color-changing effect from blue to purple is a fun surprise for your guests.
- Simple ingredients: You probably already have them in your kitchen.
- Make it your own: You can customize the flavors of this spooky Halloween drink and make it as sweet or tart as you like.
Key ingredients and substitutions
- Dried hibiscus flowers or hibiscus tea bags: These create the “blood” tea with a deep red color. You can swap with cranberry tea bags or cranberry juice for a similar tart flavor and color.
- Lemon juice: Adds a fresh, tangy bite. Lime juice works too if you prefer.
- Honey: Sweetens the tea, but you can use agave syrup, simple syrup, or even sugar.
- Butterfly pea flower powder: Also known as blue match, it’s the blue potion element that magically turns purple when mixed with lemon. I found mine on Amazon, its also on Etsy and Ebay.
- Grapes and blueberries: For those spooky eyeballs! Feel free to get creative with other fruit or candy to match your theme. Lychee eyeballs are a great option – just replace the grapes with lychees!
How to brew this spooky Halloween mocktail
- Make the hibiscus lemonade: Start by heating water until it’s just simmering (no need to boil). Pour it over your hibiscus tea bags or dried flowers, then stir in honey and let it steep for about 10 minutes. If you have time, allow it to steep until it reaches room temperature. Once cooled, add lemon juice to taste.
- Prepare the butterfly pea flower tea: In a separate jug, mix butterfly pea flower powder with warm water and let it steep for a few minutes. Set it aside to cool.
- Create the spooky eyeballs: Slice grapes in half, scoop out a little flesh, and place a blueberry in the center. Skewer them together with a toothpick to make creepy-looking eyeballs.
- Assemble the mocktail: Fill a tall glass with ice cubes. A clear plastic cup is fine for little ones. Pour in the hibiscus lemonade until the glass is 3/4 full.
- Add the magic: Slowly pour the butterfly pea flower tea on top and watch as it changes from blue to purple right before your eyes! Tip: Aim to pour it onto an ice cube so that the colors separate, and the mocktail stays red at the bottom.
- Garnish and serve: Now for the fun part: balance a grape eyeball on the rim, and your spooky mocktail is ready to be enjoyed! Happy Halloween!
Recipe notes and tips
- Bold Flavors: Let the teas steep a bit longer for a stronger taste and a more vivid color show. The deeper the hues, the spookier the effect!
- Sweetness: Feel free to tweak the sweetness. More honey? A sprinkle of sugar? It’s all up to how sweet your goblins like it.
- Fizzy Fun: For a fizzier drink, replace half of the hibiscus tea with club soda or lemon-lime soda.
Variations
- Spooky Spirits: For an adult version, add a splash of ginger ale or a clear spirit like vodka for an extra kick.
- Fruity Frights: Mix in other fruit juices like orange juice, grape juice, or pomegranate juice for additional layers of fruity flavor and color.
- Creamy Creepiness: Stir in a scoop of lime sherbet or vanilla ice cream for a creamy, dreamy twist.
- Gummy Ghouls: Toss in a few gummy worms or other Halloween candy for a playful touch that kids will love.
- Herbal Haunts: Add a cinnamon stick, star anise, or a few cloves to the hibiscus lemonade during the steeping process for a warm, spicy note. A splash of apple cider is great in this version too!
Storage instructions
- Refrigerate: Keep any leftover tea mocktail in the refrigerator. You can either store the tea separately to enjoy the magic again or mix them together. It stays fresh and tasty for up to a week.
- Mix Before Serving: Give it a good stir or shake before pouring, as the ingredients might settle.
- Ice: Serve chilled or with fresh ice to maintain the best flavor and presentation.
